Armour Refurbishment

Many of us have our favourite pieces of armour that still serve us well, but have suffered the ravages of time, wet gambesons, and poor storage. At Riverforge, we now offer a refurbishment service. We take your old battered armour and make it as close to new as we can.

This means we make the corrective measures to make your armour servicable and pleasant to wear. A more popular service with our local populace, but still available to everyone.

Alas, we may suggest the item in question is beyond help, as some of the armour we see brought in borders on the dangerous.

before during The finished work
Here is an excellent example of armour refurbishment. This started as a pretty unremarkable breast and backplate, lacking any real form.

The intermediate pic shows the marks made to give the breastplate some shape, and the result is a considerable improvement.

Needless to say, each item is different, so quoting requires us to actually see the piece in question to perform a proper inspection.

Resurrected helm

This helm pre-dates my time in the SCA and is a true relic of the local group.

I had had the pleasure of installing several of the dents that it wore.

I saw it change hands many times and trained a couple of the people who had use of it.

Then I went away to other parts of the world for a few years.

About nine years after he had parted with it, the original owner of the helm re-aquired it. It was in a very bad way. He found a place that offered to remove all of the rust for him (and for only $10 too).

What they did was to dip the helm into a barrel of rust-kill and hand it back to him. The helm was now dented, and scabborously grey/green from where the dip had contacted rust. It also had several fractured welds on the faceplate.

It looked like hell.

And so he brought it to me...

I failed in convincing him to replace it with a new one. SENTIMENTALITY CAN GO TOO FAR, but this is the result...

The helm was taken back to basic componnents and re-shaped, the plates were upholstered with red leather, the hinges and catches are all hand made. The bottom bar is for supporting the camail so that the faceplate can still open and close.

As with most helms that leave Riverforge, the securing system is now using internal D-rings and a notch in the bottom edge (this does away with shoelace strings hanging out the sides of your helm and also assures that your helm is done up to the same tension every time you put it on)

Need I add he is happy with the result?
